I recently upgraded the motherboard in my PC, which runs Windows 98 SE. At bootup the system says it needs drivers for a 'Wave device for voice modem'. The onboard sound is enabled and the drivers have been installed. I have also reinstalled the modem and the BitWare software, but the problem remains. Any suggestions?
We think this is a problem with Windows 98 SE and some modems. One of our Windows 98 SE systems exhibits the same problem whenever we install new hardware. We find no ill effects from this missing driver, which appears as an item with an exclamation mark against it under Sound, video and game controllers in Device Manager.
The way to stop Windows asking for the driver is to go through the motions of installing it. Let it search c:\Windows\System or your Windows CD-ROM for the driver. After concluding that it can't find the driver Windows will keep quiet - until the next time you run Add New Hardware.
